Gary Neville's Antonio Conte argument has Chelsea flaw and Man Utd can't afford to avoid it

Gary Neville insists Manchester United won't hot hire another "hitman" and will stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season.

The Norwegian is under huge pressure following Sunday's 5-0 defeat at home to arch rivals Liverpool.

United's poor run of form far backdates the humiliating result with questions being asked of the man in the dugout in the weeks prior, who declared the Old Trafford mauling his "darkest day".

REACTION: Klopp and Mourinho saw eye to eye on Man Utd humiliation

Major names like Cristiano Ronaldo were bought in during the summer and the patience afforded to Solskjaer means there is a demand for him to win a trophy.

Nevile has continued to defend his former teammate, amid a host of criticism, citing United's failures with other managers in the post Sir Alex Ferguson era.

He said on Sky Sports : "I've seen Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal come into this club and been disappointed.

"The reason the board will stay stable at this time and go at least until the end of the season is because of what happened with Mourinho and Van Gaal.

"They are not going to hire a hitman again. Someone who comes in for two years, they're not going to do that again.

"They are going to stick with Ole until the end of the season."

Antonio Conte is waiting in the wings and appears to be open to taking over at Old Trafford.

He has won league titles at Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan - despite not staying at any of those clubs for more than three years.

Those brief tenures are reflective of the way the modern game has gone, with few managers enjoying prolonged stays.

The hire and fire approach has been a hallmark of the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea, with the club winning numerous titles in that time.

Since buying the club in 2003 the Russian billionaire has become renowned for his ruthlessness

The Blues have churned through managers with Jose Mourinho their longest serving manager, in a stint that lasted just over three years.

World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari was sacked after less than a year, but his replacement Guus Hiddink won the FA Cup only months later.

Fan favourite Frank Lampard was chopped after 18 months, but Thomas Tuchel quickly delivered the Champions League.

The starry-eyed hope of a Ferguson-like figure coming to Old Trafford and reigning for two decades is naive. Managers do not last the course in the modern game.

Neville has taken issue with Van Gaal and Mourinho's tenures, but in less time than Solskjaer both men won trophies.

Much is made of United's silverware drought, but it was Mourinho who last delivered such success.

The League Cup and Europe League were both won in 2017. A year before that Van Gaal claimed the FA Cup.

United are a club starved of success and bringing in a man who will stop at nothing to win may well be fit for purpose.
