Gary Neville responds to Piers Morgan's "absolutely horrendous" Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dig

Gary Neville has said his refusal to call for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked is out of "decency" in a response to Piers Morgan 's jibe.

The former Manchester United captain has been under pressure on social media to call for his ex-team-mate's head, something he has nobly refused to do so despite the club reportedly considering sacking Solskjaer.

And Morgan is the latest to criticise Neville, urging him to 'take his blinkers off' after the Red Devils' 5-0 humiliation against rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

"Your mate Ole’s tactics yesterday were absolutely horrendous & United duly got the stuffing his woeful preparation deserved," the outspoken television presenter wrote on Twitter.

"He’s out of his depth and has to go - and I say this as an Arsenal fan who would love him to stay."

Neville swiftly replied by saying: "No blinkers Piers. Just decency," along with a shoulder shrug emoji.

The former United skipper, who shared a dressing room with Solskjaer under Sir Alex Ferguson for 11 years, had previously defended his decision not to call for the Norwegian's head, citing his legendary status and friendship as the reason.

"If you would have said 22 years ago that United fans would be turning on me for supporting the guy who won "us" the Champions League I would have said no way," Neville also tweeted.

"But it’s 2021 folks! In the '[Prime Minister Boris] Johnson Era' anything goes."

Neville laid the blame at both the Solskjaer and his coaching staff, and the players for Sunday's performance, which saw them 4-0 down at half-time.

"It's been coming for five, six weeks," the 46-year-old claimed. "This is what Manchester United's performance levels have been like all season.

"As soon as they've come up against a good team, they've been torn to shreds and it's told them exactly where they are at.

"This is as bad as it gets. It's the nature of the performance. They have capitulated."

Neville also cited the Red Devils' poor pressing as a reason for their demise, adding that the United boss needed to take the blame.

"They've lost everything today - discipline, organisation," he continued. "But what stands out in my mind is their organisation around the press. Finding the trigger, not getting there half-hearted.

"[ Manchester] City can press, Liverpool can press. Manchester United are kidding themselves today that they are a pressing team. They are all over the place.

"The manager and his coaching staff have to take the blame for the pressing game today. Why would you do that?

"They are not a pressing team. They haven't got it in them. If you are going to press, put in [Jesse] Lingard and the others who can run all day."
