Gary Neville responds to Liverpool giving Man City the mental edge for next season

Gary Neville doesn't believe Liverpool have handed Manchester City the mental edge going into next season - despite an embarrassing defeat.

Liverpool were battered 4-0 by the Citizens on Thursday night in their first match since winning the title last week.

The Reds were named champions following Man City's defeat by Chelsea, and it seems Pep Guardiola's men had a point to prove.

After giving Jurgen Klopp's side a guard of honour, Manchester City went to town on Liverpool.

Kevin de Bruyne kick-started the rout with a goal from the penalty spot before Raheem Sterling made it two against his former club.

Phil Foden got the better of Andy Robertson to make it three, and finally an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal made it four.

Riyad Mahrez did have the ball in the back of the net for a fifth, but a VAR check saw the decision overturned due to a handball in the build-up.

Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler asked Neville during the match whether the defeat could have a psychological effect on Liverpool ahead of next season.

But Neville dismissed this notion. He said: "I do think there is an element of City proving to themselves they can come back this season.

"But for Liverpool achieving what they did last week, this doesn't put mean too much. Of course there is a bit of embarrassment, but that will be gone in a few weeks time."
