Gary Neville predicts Premier League title race "twist" involving Liverpool and Man City

Gary Neville forecasts a dramatic conclusion to the Premier League title race as he expects there may yet be a late "twist" in the compelling contest between Manchester City and Liverpool.

The two star-studded teams have been neck-and-neck at the top of the table for many weeks with defending champions City holding the advantage. The Sky Blues could have delivered a hammer blow to their rivals if they had defeated West Ham on Sunday afternoon, but could only manage a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

This means Liverpool are four points behind ahead of their trip to Southampton on Tuesday night, three days after winning the FA Cup with a penalty shootout triumph over Chelsea to keep their slim quadruple hopes alive. To secure top-flight glory, the Reds need City to slip up against Aston Villa - managed by Anfield legend Steven Gerrard - on the final day of the season.

It is hard to see this happening as Pep Guardiola's side will be desperate to bounce back from their draw in East London with a strong display in the Midlands. However, Neville is adamant the title race is far from over, telling Sky Sports: "I think there's a twist somewhere, I always think there's a twist.

"They (City) are incredible. They've got such good depth to be able to call upon, even with the centre-backs that they've got out. They've got (Nathan) Ake on the bench who cost a lot of money. They still have a brilliant squad."

City travelled to the London Stadium with Ruben Dias, John Stones and Kyle Walker unavailable due to injury, but Guardiola was able to name £40million Ake on the bench. Aymeric Laporte was fit enough to start at the heart of defence alongside Fernandinho, who is continuing to fill in at centre-back.

Despite predicting a "twist" in the title race tale, Neville heaped praise on City and credited them with making a tricky trip to Molineux look very easy. The Manchester United legend added: "From City's point of view, I thought that one of their hurdles they had to jump over was obviously at Wolves [where they won 5-1] the other night, they were absolutely brilliant."

While the Sky Blues host Villa on the final day of the season, Liverpool will face off with Wolves. There could be plenty of drama elsewhere in the table, too, with Arsenal and Tottenham embroiled in a fierce battle for fourth place while Everton, Leeds and Burnley are vying to avoid relegation to the Championship.
