Gary Neville praises West Ham and David Moyes for their 'outstanding performance' this season

Gary Neville has praised the consistency of West Ham this season in moving from the brink of relegation to European football in just over a year.

When David Moyes was reappointed as Hammers manager in December 2019 the club were sitting just one point outside the relegation places. The Scot led the West Ham to a 16th-place finish that season, five points clear of the danger zone.

The 2020-21 season has seen Moyes take his club to sixth spot and a club-record Premier League points tally of 65, three higher than their previous best of 62 under Slaven Bilic in 2015-16.

The Hammers have impressed Neville this season, with the former England defender labeling the team as 'outstanding'.

"West Ham were consistent all season," he told Sky Sports.

"An outstanding performance. They flirted with Champions League but you always felt they were just going to drop out at the last, but this is a really good season."

One negative for Neville was been the lack of opportunity for Hammers fans to bond with their manager and watch their team in person.

"It's a pity West Ham fans have not been able to bond with David Moyes and watch the team this season," he said.

"It has not been what you would typically think of as a David Moyes type season, there's a lot of talent in that team, they have played good football, they have got a good spine.

"That club, to be fair, have been disconnected over the last three or four years with the stadium, the ownership. Actually, it's a real shame the fans have missed this season for them."

Ten thousand West Ham fans were able to watch their team in person on Sunday and they saw the Hammers record a comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton that secured Europa League football.

After the match, Moyes spoke to the supporters in the stadium, thanking them for their continued support, and ended by telling them to "get your vaccines and passports ready as we are going to Europe."
