Gary Neville praises Ralf Rangnick's Manchester United full-back decision vs Norwich

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has supported Ralf Rangnick's decision to stick with Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles in the full-back positions against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

After making 11 changes for Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League, Rangnick has opted to rotate his pack again, reverting back to the exact same United side that saw off Crystal Palace last weekend.

That means that Dalot and Telles have returned to the right-back and left-back berths in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw, respectively.

Prior to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's exit from the club last month, Wan-Bissaka and Shaw had been two of the first names on the teamsheet, meaning Rangnick has been brave enough to follow in former caretaker manager Michael Carrick's footsteps and mix things up.

Although Dalot and Telles have not seen an awful lot of football so far this term, Neville believes Rangnick is correct to select the duo, insisting that they are better suited for the way that he wants United to play.

Neville told Sky Sports : "I think the two full-backs, because of the system that they play, are more unpredictable, they are better on the ball and they are more like wing-backs, Dalot and Telles.

"Shaw is not in a good moment and not in the best form. Wan-Bissaka, we know, is not brilliant going forward and he is a little bit scruffy on the ball.

"I think these two do suit the way that the team is set up and I think that they will link up very well with Fernandes and Sancho, and will always be outside them.

"We are yet to see these two players tested in this system from a defensive point of view so I think we just have to wait. It might not even be today, it might be further down the line. That will always be the question about these two full-backs."

With United playing with such a narrow system in the advanced areas of the pitch, the use of the full-backs in Rangnick's preferred formation is vital, with them having plenty of responsibilities.

"I think Telles is in better form at the moment," Neville added. "He is tenacious, he brings a real energy to that left-hand side and he reminds me of, although he is not as good yet, Patrice Evra when he first came to England.

"And Dalot on that right side is a powerhouse running forward. He is a really good runner, he is athletic, he is good on the ball and he can deliver more than Wan-Bissaka.

"I think it is a case of how Rangnick wants to play with this very narrow spine. There is a lot expected of those two when going forward and then, obviously, retreating back when they lose the ball."
