Gary Neville pokes fun at Dominic Cummings over 'uncomfortable' press conference

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has poked fun at Dominic Cummings' recent press conference with a self-deprecating tweet referencing his disastrous spell in charge at Valencia.

Mr Cummings - the chief advisor to Prime Minister Boris Johnson - issued a statement and answered questions in the Rose Garden at 10 Downing Street on Monday afternoon after facing mounting pressure to quit his role following allegations that he broke lockdown rules.

Such an event inevitably dominated discussions across social media, with Neville describing Mr Cummings' performance as: "The most uncomfortable I’ve seen an Englishman in a press conference since a 7-0 defeat in Barcelona."

Neville's tweet - which has already attracted almost 35,000 'likes' - refers to a Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg contest in February 2016, when his Valencia side were crushed by Barcelona at Camp Nou in what was labelled as one of the worst results in the club's history.

After the 7-0 loss, he answered questions during a tense press conference that lasted only 11 minutes, repeatedly facing questions regarding his own future on a wretched evening that he described as one of his "most painful nights in football".

While Neville was not sacked immediately after that heavy loss, his only foray into senior management to date eventually lasted less than four months, with Los Che - who drew the second leg of that semi-final contest 1-1 at Mestalla - winning only 10 of their total 28 matches under his leadership, and only three out of 16 games in LaLiga.

Since being sacked by Valencia in March 2016, the former England right-back and coach has resumed his career as a successful broadcaster with Sky Sports and also serves alongside his fellow United 'Class of 92' members as co-owner of League Two club Salford City.
