Gary Neville has accused Jose Mourinho of neglecting Memphis Depay during the Dutchman's short career at Manchester United.
Depay only spent a season-and-a-half with the Red Devils and managed two goals in 33 Premier League appearances.
He joined from PSV in 2015 to work under fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal - but fell out of favour during his second campaign at the club with Jose Mourinho at the helm.
Since leaving United, Depay has gone on to prove his ability at Lyon and recently agreed a summer switch to Barcelona.
Neville has now taken aim at Mourinho for failing to give Depay a chance, having since witnessed his development as a player.
"He came to Manchester United when the club wasn’t in a stable position, once Van Gaal had left and when Jose came in, he didn’t want to work with him because of what he did on and off the pitch," the former United right-back told ITV.
Neville added: "When he came to United, they did not have the time for him which is a shame but he has proved with maturity that he has turned into a top player."
Discussing his exit from United in an interview with the Times, Depay said: "When I left, I said to Mourinho 'you will see me at the top. He said: 'OK, I hope that and I hope we will buy you back one day.' I never had a bad relationship with him.
"If you don't perform well some people want you to hide and be in your cave and I'm so not that type of person. If I look back, it was just me. I wanted to succeed so bad. I wanted to train so hard.

"I don't think it was the English media, because the media don't determine how I play in the game. Sometimes my opportunities weren't enough but I didn't deliver what was expected, never mind what people expect, what I expect from myself. And Manchester is a great club. I don't feel they treated me wrong."
After leaving Old Trafford, Depay scored 76 goals in 178 appearances for Lyon during his five seasons in France.
The Dutchman reinforced his undoubted quality at Euro 2020, with two goals and two assists at the tournament despite suffering an early exit at the hands of Czech Republic.
