Gary Neville pinpoints how Man City 'let down' Pep Guardiola in transfer market

Gary Neville thinks Manchester City have let Pep Guardiola down by failing to sign a new striker.

City drew 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday with Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne on the scoresheet for Guardiola's men.

The visitors created a plethora of chances in the first half but failed to convert any of them.

Guardiola started with £100million summer signing from Aston Villa Jack Grealish up front and Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden either side of him.

Grealish was playing as a 'false nine' while Jesus, the club's only senior out-and-out striker, was shifted out to the wing.

Neville thinks that City have not done Guardiola, or his players, any favours by not bringing in a new centre-forward.

Sergio Aguero departed the Etihad Stadium upon the end of his contract in the summer and City were heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund goal machine Erling Haaland and Tottenham Hotspur captain Harry Kane.

However, City failed in their attempts to sign Kane but with Haaland's release clause set to fall to around £77m next summer it is expected that Guardiola's side will make a move for the 21-year-old.

Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage of City's game at Liverpool, Neville said: "City have spent a lot of money but most people including myself would say they have spent it well over the last few years, their improvement has been precise.

"But not to get a centre forward in the last couple of years is poor, I think, it lets him down and the players out on the pitch because they need one.

"If they had one, they would have been up in the first half I am pretty sure about that."
