Gary Neville on the key Raheem Sterling change since they worked together after Man City goal vs Arsenal

Gary Neville believes the positions Raheem Sterling takes up for Manchester City have dramatically improved since the pair worked together at England.

Neville was the Three Lions' assistant manager from 2012 until 2016, with Sterling making his international debut in the same year that the former Manchester United defender started his job.

The City star has been in sparkling form for the runaway Premier League leaders yet again this season - scoring 12 goals in all competitions.

The 26-year-old opened the scoring in City's away clash against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, heading the ball past a stranded Bernd Leno in the second minute.

Neville, who was on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports' coverage of the match at the Emirates Stadium, named the one key thing Sterling has added to his game since they worked together and praised Pep Guardiola for his influence.

“I think what Pep has made him is one of those modern wide players in a three that has the goal scoring return of a striker yet the position of a winger," the United legend said.

"Gone are the days where we expect wide players just to cross the ball now, we expect them to deliver assists and goals on a regular basis.

"The rules have been changed in the last five or 10 years for wide players and for full-backs. I certainly think he’s better off this left side, that’s his best position, no doubt. Off the right, he’s not as strong. He’s not a clinical finisher, Sterling, but he gets into better positions since he’s worked with Pep Guardiola.

"When I worked with him at England, you could say his finishing was erratic. Now the positions he gets into are better, there’s no doubt.”
