Gary Neville names Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford as England's most promising player

Gary Neville says Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has the most potential out of England's young team.

Neville, who was part of the England coaching staff when Rashford made his international debut, says the striker can step up to become United's first choice striker next season.

Rashford has had a turbulent campaign, with some indifferent performances from the wing under Jose Mourinho, before a rejuvenation upfront under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But in recent weeks his performances have dropped again as the team's form slumped, and there have been question marks over the 21-year-old.

However, former United defender Neville believes Rashford can overcome his difficult period and begin next season by rising to the high standards he has set himself.

In a Sky Sports Q&A Neville was asked which of England’s current youngsters has the highest potential, and immediately answered Rashford.

Manchester United now odds-on to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid this summer

He explained: “Because I love him. He’s one that I think... United obviously with [Romelu] Lukaku playing up front, there’s been talk of them needing a new centre forward.

"Alexis [Sanchez] hasn’t done particularly well but they don’t need a new centre-forward if [Anthony] Martial and Rashford can step up. Rashford in particular.”

Looking back on his career, Neville was also asked whether Roy Keane or Paul Scholes was a better player.

Paul Pogba agent Mino Raiola issues statement on three-month transfer ban

He responded: “Scholesy I’ve known since he was 12. I’d always say Scholesy, I love him to bits, sat next to him in the changing room. As a player, I’d always say Scholes is the best player I’ve ever played with.

“Roy was definitely the most inspirational, he had the biggest impact on the pitch. Scholes, Giggs and Keane were the best players I ever played with.”
