Gary Neville has named the “unsung hero” at Liverpool after their win over West Ham.
The Reds claimed a 3-1 win over the Hammers at the London Stadium to move up to third place in the Premier League table and four points behind leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
Mohamed Salah scored two goals to take his tally for the season up to 21 in all competitions, and is the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush to score 20 goals for the club in four successive seasons.
Gini Wijnaldum rounded off the scoring for Liverpool, and Neville was full of praise for the Dutchman after he found the back of the net.
Wijnaldum’s contract is still up for expiry at the end of the season, and Neville says that his importance to Liverpool often gets unnoticed.
“We talk about what are Wijnaldum’s options at the end of the season, he’s an unsung hero, really, in this Liverpool team,” said Neville while on commentary for Sky Sports, shortly after the Dutchman’s goal.
“He’s someone you quite often don’t notice among the other really good Liverpool players that they have, but he does a brilliant job and he gets a good goal.”
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness was also full of praise for Wijnaldum, and reckons the club are facing a dilemma over his contract situation.
"It’s worth mentioning Wijnaldum, I thought he was outstanding again today," Souness told Sky Sports.
"I know it must be a headache for the club to come to a decision given his age, he might want too long of a contract to come up to 33 maybe, but they’re gonna miss him if he should go.”
