Gary Neville namechecks Leeds United in latest European Super League tirade

Gary Neville believes the botched European Super League proposals were an 'attack' on Leeds United and other Premier League clubs after labelling the breakaway as 'the attempted murder of English football'.

The so-called big six's plans to join a league with Spanish and Italian clubs fell through last week just 48 hours after it had been first announced.

Neville appeared on numerous programmes for Sky Sports to make vehemently clear his opposition to the plans, with his former club Manchester United included in the sextet of English clubs who hoped to join the 12-team league.

Leeds themselves were vocal in their own stance on the ESL, with players wearing shirts ahead of their 1-1 draw with Liverpool last week to demonstrate their view.

And in his latest rant on the Super League, Neville namechecked Leeds as one of the great English clubs who stood to be significantly affected financially by the ESL prior to its demise.

“It was an attack on Leeds United, it was an attack on Everton, it was an attack on West Ham and on Newcastle,” Neville said.

“Some of the greatest clubs in the history of English football.

“But then I look at Jimmy [Floyd Hasselbaink]. What about Ajax? PSV? Feyenoord? These unbelievable clubs.

“They were just left. Left with the pennies whilst the rich just went away and took £300 million every year for 23 years and created their own league.

“Honestly, the scariest thing is that these people are regrouping back at base. They are not going away. This is their second attempt in the last 18 months.”
