Gary Neville makes VAR admission about Newcastle goal vs Nottingham Forest after foul claim

Gary Neville believes there was a foul in the build-up to Newcastle United's equaliser against Nottingham Forest - but was not surprised that VAR did not rule the goal out.

Newcastle's Joe Willock appeared to kick Andre Ayew shortly before Alexander Isak found the net in Friday night's Premier League clash at the City Ground. And the goal was allowed to stand.

Former Manchester United player Neville was speaking at half-time with the scores level at 1-1. Emmanuel Dennis had given Forest the lead in the 26th minute before Isak levelled in first-half stoppage time.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: "Newcastle absolutely deserved that. It would have been criminal at half-time (if they had been losing).

"Forest wanted a foul. Look, he (Willock) does kick the back of his (Ayew's) heel. I'm sure when Steve Cooper looks at it, he'll be claiming (a foul) - but VAR are never going to turn that over.

"Ordinarily, if you tackle someone and kick them from behind on their ankle, the referee will give it. But you just know the way in which this light touch from VAR, they are not going to turn that over.

"We were up there in the studio thinking what's going to happen here? And we pretty much knew the answer."
