Gary Neville makes Tottenham VAR claim after last-gasp Man City drama

Gary Neville says that the video assistant referee was probably Tottenham's best player as Spurs got a last-gasp reprieve to earn a point at Manchester City .

It appeared as though Gabriel Jesus had won the game for City when he fired home to make it 3-2 in stoppage time, because of the detection of a handball by City defender Aymeric Laporte in the build-up.

Prior to that, strikes from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero had twice been pegged back by Erik Lamela and then Tottenham sub Lucas Moura, with those two efforts serving as two of the visitors' three efforts at goal all game.

City on the other hand had 30, but were forced to settle for a point due to the late decision, which came about following a change to the handball rule this season.

And Sky Sports pundit Neville says Spurs were lucky.

"Tottenham fans are singing 'VAR'," the former Manchester United defender said after the game.

"VAR has probably been their best player today. I cannot think of anything more important for them today,"

Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris admitted that he thought his side had lost the game.

"To be honest I thought it was a goal. It’s a bit unlucky for City. But we are very pleased with the point," he said.

Goalscorer Moura added: “It was crazy when the City goal was ruled out.

“It was the last minute and I thought the game was finished when it went in. Only VAR can see – and thank you for it. It’s a good result because we know how difficult it is to play here.

“We always need to play with this spirit.”
