Phil Neville makes Liverpool claim and sends Manchester United warning

Phil Neville reckons his former club Manchester United could be Liverpool’s biggest challengers to retaining their Premier League crown this season.

Last term the Reds ended the longest title drought in their history as they secured their first League Championship for 30 years with a record seven games to spare.

However, as they now look to retain the prize for the first time since 1983-84, Neville believes that his old team, not “noisy neighbours” City as Alex Ferguson once called them, Liverpool’s main challengers in recent years, might provide the greatest threat.

A 1-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last night saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side climb to second in the table and just two points behind Liverpool at the summit with both sides having played 15 games so far.

When asked about United’s prospects of challenging for the title, Neville, who departed Old Traford for Everton in 2005, told Amazon Prime Video : “I think they can.

“I think what you’ve got to do when you’re looking at a title race is look at the competition.

“Liverpool are out in front and rightly so, I think they’re the best team in the country.

“But there is no other team that is actually grasping to go and challenge Liverpool.

“Chelsea have slipped up, Tottenham have slipped up recently, Everton are up there who are in really good form. Apart from that, Manchester City are just climbing.

“United are in this title race if they keep to this level of performance.

“They’re playing better football, they’re entertaining, they’re starting to win at home. They’ve got a big squad, they’re scoring goals.”
