Gary Neville makes England selection prediction about 'hurting' Manchester United star

Gary Neville believes Luke Shaw will have been "hurting" after seeing Kieran Trippier selected ahead of him at left-back for England.

The Manchester United full-back was an unused substitute for the Three Lions in their Euro 2020 opener against Croatia, which was won 1-0 thanks to Raheem Sterling's strike.

But England boss Gareth Southgate caused some controversy with his selections. He didn't name a single United player in the starting line-up, with right-back Trippier preferred to both Shaw and Ben Chilwell, who are natural left-sided players.

The Atletico Madrid man — who is of interest to United this summer ahead of a possible transfer — played well, but former England and United full-back Neville said Shaw and Chilwell will be hurting.

Asked by Sky Sports how Southgate should shuffle his pack for England's next game against Scotland, Neville said: "I think there will be some changes ahead of Scotland. I think Gareth looks at each match as an individual event.

"I don't think he does what many managers do which is to think 'I've got a winning team, I'm going to stick with it'. He may, he could surprise us.

"But it wouldn't surprise me if one of the left-backs came in. I think they'll be hurting after seeing Kieran Trippier play in front of them. Definitely one of the left-backs to get more attacking impetus down the left against Scotland, is something I think he will do.

"We are going to need to be more proactive than we were [against Croatia]. There's going to be more pressure on England because we're expected to win."

Shaw was named in the Premier League PFA team of the year at left-back and also won the United players' player of the season prize. He was deservedly recalled to the England squad this summer, but will be hoping Neville is right about Southgate's team to face Scotland.
