Gary Neville makes concerning admission on completion of season amid coronavirus

Gary Neville has admitted he is "a lot less confident" of the domestic season being completed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Salford City co-owner has been central to discussions between the EFL and PFA as to how the campaign could reach a resolution in the coming months.

One suggestion being mooted is the potential for players to be quarantined for weeks while all fixtures are played out over a short period.

But league officials are largely reacting to UK government guidelines, with the country on lockdown for at least another three weeks and that date likely to be extended further.

And Neville feels the prospect of the football season being completed now hangs in the balance.

He told Sky Sports' The Football Show: "About 5-6 weeks ago I was 99 per cent confident about football being completed this season and all competitions being completed under the circumstances.

"But having been part of the League Two owners discussion seeing the complexities, seeing the challenges with contracts, seeing the issues if players play behind closed doors, then get it [coronavirus] again and go into quarantine.

"I’m a lot less confident of football finishing than I was 5-6 weeks ago, now we’re getting to the crux of the matter and these types of decision are being made."

EFL chief executive Rick Parry has admitted that it is "likely" that matches will be played "without crowds" when football does eventually resume.

In an open letter to fans, Parry explained how there were "significant operational and financial challenges" to be considered when deciding on the best course of action.

The Premier League are facing the same predicament, and officials were holding a video conference with clubs and representative groups on Friday to further discuss how certain matters - including player pay cuts - could be handled.

Neville accepted that a lot of decisions have been out of the hands of Premier League club chiefs, but was openly critical about their efforts to communicate during the current crisis.

He said: "They've [Premier League] got decisions to make, but some things are out of their hands.

"What I would criticise them for most is: Where are the club owners? Where are the club CEOs? Why are they not communicating to everybody in this country what is happening?

"There is an absolute abyss of lost information, we're just speculating all the time."

"You see the government - whether it's good or bad - communicating every single day, other businesses in other industries communicating every single day. Football's gone quiet. Hiding."
