Gary Neville launches scathing attack on "embarrassing" Paul Pogba after handball

Gary Neville was left furious with Paul Pogba after he conceded a costly penalty in Manchester United's clash with West Ham.

Pogba was attempting to get out of the way of a powerful long-range shot from Declan Rice when he put his hands up to block the ball.

He initially went down with it appearing the ball had hit him flush in the face, and he felt his nose as if to suggest there was some damage.

But VAR quickly determined that he had ducked and raised his hands to block the ball as the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Michail Antonio made no mistake to convert from 12 yards and give his side the lead on the stroke of half-time.

And Neville made his feelings known on commentary as he blasted: "You don't do that".

Watching the first replay, he said: "He's in trouble. He's in big trouble, Paul Pogba.

"He's in big, big trouble. He's given a penalty away then pretended it's hit his head."

He continued to blast the Frenchman as VAR looked at the footage.

"It's rubbish from him. Rubbish," he blasted.

"And to think I felt a little bit sorry for him. I thought he took a whack in the head. Embarrassing.

"I don't know why VAR are looking at it that long to be honest, it's a penalty.

"He shakes his head. Is he trying to make out he's got a bloody nose?

"No brainer, don't know what he's looking at, it's a penalty.

“I could say less if it was instinctive, but that ball was 15 metres away.

“I don’t know why they’re looking at it so long, VAR, it’s a clear penalty.

“You don’t do that, you take it in your grid."

He added: “Forget the fact it’s an appalling lack of discipline from Paul Pogba, West Ham have been the better team for the last 15 minutes," he added.

Former team-mate Patrice Evra was also making no excuses for Pogba as he reflected on the incident at half-time.

Evra said: "I think Paul knows he made a big mistake.

"It's difficult to defend Paul on this one, but now he knows what he has to do in the second half."

Former West Ham defender James Collins added in the studio: "They all looked a bit slow to react to it in the first place.

"Fernandes was a bit slow to get out to the block then Pogba has done what he's done.

"As a hardened centre-half I think you've got to take that on the face and deal with it."
