Gary Neville issues verdict on Manchester United's Champions League hopes after Chelsea victory

Gary Neville believes the Champions League chase remains very difficult to predict, despite Manchester United's impressive performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire proved to be the difference in West London, in a match where the hosts were left frustrated after seeing two goals ruled out by the video assistant referee.

The result means United are just three points behind the Blues in the hunt for Champions League football and remain two behind Tottenham in fifth place, a final position that could also end up being enough to secure qualification for next season's group phase after Manchester City's ban.

However, Neville remains unconvinced about United's credentials due to their lack of consistency but did identify positives in the performance.

“I could swing from week to week, I could say Manchester United tonight because I feel quite confident with what they’ve done but I could be sat here this time next week and United have lost, Chelsea have won, and we’re back to where we were," he told Sky Sports.

“Neither team give me ultimate belief and faith, I don’t think you can trust either of them yet to go on a run towards the end of the season. United feel confident tonight but they’re far from perfect.

“What I would say is the back three tonight looked decent and the midfield, with Matic, Fred and Fernandes, looked as good as it has done all season so there are positives for United tonight, I think they can be the ones to leave feeling better. But what both teams do from here is difficult to predict.”
