Gary Neville issues damning verdict on Man City defence after Leicester City defeat

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has issued a damning verdict on Manchester City's defence following the defeat to Leicester City.

Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring against his former side to give City the lead but the Foxes responded valiantly, with Jamie Vardy netting a hat-trick before James Maddison and Youri Tielemans added further gloss to the scoreline.

As a result, City shipped five in their first home game of the season and, despite Ruben Dias' expected arrival from Benfica, Neville has made it clear there is a lot of work to be done.

“This is becoming a mess for City. They’re signing a centre-back tonight or tomorrow, we believe," he said on Sky Sports.

"Laporte’s on the bench, he needs to get that back four together and quickly because every other team in the league will be watching and thinking, ‘They’re soft at the back, you can get at them’.

“Three different players, making the same basic error. His defenders aren’t good enough, whichever way you wanna look at it.

"He’s a great coach, one of the greatest coaches of all-time, but one-on-one, once his defenders get in those positions, they’re really poor.

"It’s almost like in their mind, they can’t get their head around the fact that someone has got goal-side of them.”
