Gary Neville issues clear Arsenal January transfer warning as Mikel Arteta eyes new signings

Former Manchester United defender and pundit Gary Neville has warned Mikel Arteta that signings in January could upset the balance of the Arsenal squad. It comes after the Gunners have made an ideal start to the campaign, reaching the break for the World Cup top of the table with a five point gap to second.

There may be two concerns though, one of which being the time between now and the next game in late December, potentially halting the side's momentum. There's also the case of squad depth, with Arteta already bemoaning his lack of options after a cup exit to Brighton.

"We know where we are and we knew the moment we had certain injuries that the squad is already very, very short. We have tried to manage that in the best possible situation. But it’s the same when we win a football match, no excuses."

It could lead to the Spaniard making a number of signings in the transfer window that is coming up, with the Gunners continuing to be linked with moves for midfielders and wingers in the past few weeks. However, given the harmony in the squad, Neville has cautioned Arteta against signings.

He said on the Gary Neville podcast: "You ask the question now: would Arsenal strengthen in January? What risk does that bring? Do you strengthen to boost the squad or do you strengthen to actually boost the first eleven?

"If you strengthen to boost the first eleven do you upset one of the players or two of the players that are in there? And that's the sort of conundrum that will be going through the Arsenal board's mind at this moment in time.

"Because I'm not quite sure any of the other clubs will do that. I'm not sure City will do business to be honest with you, I'm not sure any of the other clubs at the top will do business. There's a sense that Arsenal may do in midfield."

It remains to be seen if the club will make a move to add to their squad in January, having typically avoided the window for reinforcements. However, there could be a sense of an opportunity to back the manager in a huge chance to win the Premier League title.
