Gary Neville issues brutal Ben White verdict as Jack Wilshere opens up on Arsenal captain drama

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Sunday, December 19.

Neville criticises White

Gary Neville has described Ben White's penalty-conceding challenge in Arsenal's win against Leeds United as "really poor".

With the Gunners 3-0 up at Elland Road, White slid in and brought down Whites striker Joe Gelhardt, with the referee quick to point to the spot, despite the Arsenal defender celebrating with Aaron Ramsdale as if he had won the ball.

Neville, who was on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports' coverage of the clash, issued his brutally honest verdict on the piece of defending from the England international.

He said: "Ramsdale was celebrating with Ben White like he had made a brilliant challenge, but the referee pointed to the spot. It is definitely a penalty. It is a really poor challenge from White."

Wilshere verdict

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has delivered his verdict on the captaincy situation at his old side after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was relieved of his skipper duties.

Wilshere hailed French forward Alexandre Lacazette, praising the former Lyon star's leadership qualities.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I don’t think you have to be that vocal. Do you have to be that vocal now to be a captain?

“There are different types of captains where you lead with the way you play. Lacazette was different class (against West Ham). He would be a contender.”

Rodriguez interest

Arsenal have shown interest in Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez, according to transfer expert Hernan Castillo.

The Gunners were fiercely linked with the Argentine international earlier this year before eventually signing Belgian youngster Albert Sambi Lokonga.

However, with Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey both heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year, then perhaps Mikel Arteta's side may need additional reinforcements in the middle of the park.
