We knew it was going to be a difficult game against Man City. They're a top class side, they've got a fantastic squad.
But you're just hoping that the occasion of Sergio Aguero's last game and lifting the title that the focus won't be on their own performance. Maybe they'd already be focusing on the Champions League.
On the flip side, the players who were given the responsibility to get a result might try and sway Pep Guardiola's mindset in terms of his selection for that final.
We were clutching at straws wondering how we would finish the season on a high. It was good going into the last game having a chance of getting into Europe.
But as soon as the game kicked off, that was it.
It was that typical, disappointing performance that we've witnessed so many times this season.
You can't be going into football games, no matter who you're playing against, without your top effort. Especially when you're playing against the best, you have to give your best.
They didn't seem to do that. We did it in moments, but it just wasn't at the right level - the right desire was not there.
It should be a wake-up call to Marcel Brands. If they think we can just bring in two or three players and it will make a difference, they need to realise it won't.
We need a lot of signings to come into this football club, at big levels.
We've been on this journey for far too many years now as a football club without progressing further, really, as a football club.
You can say we've progressed slightly, but with the amount of investment Farhad Moshiri has brought to the table, there's other clubs around us who have spent less and progressed in a better fashion, winning trophies along the way.
That's something for the board to consider in the future, but going back to this weekend the players let themselves down again.
They were embarrassed. The amount of easy possession that we lost was criminal.
Again it's not the first time you can say that about us this season. We just can't keep the football.
Gary Neville alluded to it many times in his commentary and he's right, people might not like it but it's true from him, we try to take the extra touch or do the extra pass - and it's too slow.
It's not a training game. You set up like that in training and say if you can get ten passes then you can score, we can't get ten passes in a match. When we do, it's backwards and sideways.
I don't know what game these guys think they're playing. It's simple, you've got to go forward at some point if you want to cause problems.
We just didn't do it enough, we didn't ask enough questions. Yes decisions went against us and the penalty might have changed something if we'd have scored it, but there was only ever going to be one winner of that game.
Man City have won the league, and I know they have a final on the horizon, but they're still putting in a performance there.
We've got players who aren't getting tight, we've got centre-halves trying to dribble out from the back - and it's not the first time we've had that this season either - we're letting players turn.
The best striker in the Premier League over the last ten years comes off the bench and is just allowed to turn inside our own box. That is schoolboy football.
That's a wake-up call to show you're not good enough to play for this football club if we want to move forward. We've been let down far too many times. You can have a few bad games, but this happens far too often.
You look at excuses such as fatigue and having a very different pre-season, everyone else has had that. Their mentality has been totally different.
If you look at where we've finished, it's embarrassing considering where we were not too long ago. Leeds finished ahead of us, we've got a minus goal difference. It does not look pretty at all.
I only hope that, in a strange way, this is a wake-up call for the board and Carlo Ancelotti to bring in more players.
I know they said they're not going to panic and they're sticking to the plan, but I do feel that we'd be very disappointed if we don't see five or six players coming in this summer.
If Moshiri wants a return on his investment and we want to be successful, that's going to be the minimum requirement.
A lot of teams above us have had the same pressure from the fans, being frustrated about their season. They're going to be playing catch-up in the transfer window - Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, even Leicester aren't happy with where they finished.
It's very difficult but we've been in this boat before, we've said this over numerous summers. Can we progress, can we get into Europe?
There's question marks on all the players. Their desire, their willingness to improve themselves.
They're going to go home embarrassed. The season is over now, they had their flip-flops on at the Etihad, and now they can go and relax.
They should look back at the season and be very embarrassed about how it's finished. Some players will start to question if this is the club for them, they want to start winning things and pushing themselves.
It could be a very difficult summer for Marcel Brands and the Everton board if some players start questioning the dream they were promised when they joined.
We need to add better quality, and we need to keep hold of the better players that are there.
Obviously we're not privy to what the plan is, but surely the performances in 2021 will make the plan a lot bigger and better.
They can't just rely on the performances that we had at the start of the season. The lack of consistency and quality we have in the squad and in the starting 11 is there for all to see.
When we're trying to attract players now, it's going to be more difficult from outside those European positions. Finishing tenth, players want to develop year-on-year.
The comments that I heard a few weeks ago about not panicking and going ahead with summer plans, it's great to see we're going to spend money, but how much are we going to spend?
