Gary Neville insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has 'restored Man Utd's soul' despite sacking

Gary Neville has issued a heartfelt statement after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking on Sunday to thank his former team-mate for his efforts.

Solskjaer was given the boot on Sunday after a 4-1 defeat at Watford followed on from back-to-back home defeats to arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Many had been calling for the Norwegian to be sacked for months, but Neville was one of those who refused to call for Solskjaer's head.

And after the trigger was finally pulled on Sunday, the ex-right-back spoke only positively about Solskjaer despite the recent miserable run of form.

"Thank you Ole. You did us proud," he tweeted.

"The last two months were tough but before that you restored some soul into the club."

On Friday, Neville stressed that it is "not my style" to call for a dismissal, while he refused to point the finger after the Watford defeat.

"I had to decide 11 years ago what type of person and pundit I wanted to be," Neville told The Mail, while stressing it is "not my style" to call for a dismissal.

"When Arsene Wenger was dying at the end I was critical of Arsenal fans marching against him. There were complaints when I called one of them a muppet.

"As pundits we have to decide whether we are comfortable asking for a fellow human being to be sacked. I feel I am a respectable human being."

United have confirmed that Michael Carrick will take over in the immediate aftermath, before they search for an interim boss until the end of the season.

A statement on the club's official site reads: "Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision.

"While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

"Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments.

"He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.

"Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season."
