Gary Neville believes Manchester United can no longer rely on David de Gea.
The Spaniard has won a host of accolades during his Old Trafford tenure, but was lambasted by United great Roy Keane following his error in the 1-1 draw at Spurs on Friday night.
De Get allowed a fiercely hit but straight-at-him Steven Bergwijn drive to ricochet off his right fist and into the net at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And it wasn’t the first time that the former Atletico Madrid stopper has been culpable for an opposition goal in recent seasons; according to Opta, no other 'keeper has made more errors directly leading to goals than the 29 year-old.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brushed off criticism of his No.1 post-game, after Keane had claimed he would have been “swinging punches” in the dressing room if he was still in the United side.
Keane also declared himself “sick to death” of De Gea.
While Neville hasn’t gone that far, he admits that he believes De Gea has regressed.
And according to the former United skipper, it is now two years since the best version of De Gea has been seen.
"He was the one player United could rely upon for the last four years but he's not the same," he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.
"He hasn't been the same for some time. When form drops for six months it's a blip but when it goes on for a year you start to worry. When it goes over two years it becomes more permanent.
"That is now a fair representation of what De Gea is as he's making lots of mistakes. Ones he would never make - he was always somebody you could completely rely upon.
"It can only be a confidence thing. The arms, legs and body are the same - it's got to be the mind.
"The reception he's got in Spain has affected him. He's even been booed by Spanish fans when he's wearing the Spanish shirt.
“In the World Cup in 2018 he really struggled and from that he's doubted himself.
"Mentally he's not quite the same."
