Gary Neville identifies the ideal system for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should utilise a five-man defensive line more often, in order to get the best out of his squad.

The Red Devils punished Chelsea on the counter-attack during the first half of their Carabao Cup clash at Stamford Bridge, with Daniel James bursting through and winning a penalty that was converted by Marcus Rashford.

United named a strong team for their fourth-round clash in West London but one of the biggest changes was at the back, where three central defenders lined up alongside two wing-backs.

According to Neville , that plays to United's strengths and benefits the likes of James, Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Fred and Scott McTominay.

“I like this system because I think it suits the back players. The wing-backs play well and I actually think it helps Fred and McTominay that they’ve got three centre-backs behind them,” he told Sky Sports.

“But I think it really suits Rashford, James and Lingard because they can be really flexible and move across that front line.

“None of them really like to be pinned down, they just like to make runs, particularly off the counter-attack. Manchester United won the ball back and James was away.”
