Gary Neville identifies Luke Shaw's best position at Manchester United

Gary Neville believes Luke Shaw has found his perfect calling as the left centre-back in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's new Manchester United formation.

Solskjaer has been keen to accommodate both Shaw and Brandon Williams in his side in recent games, playing a three centre-backs in games against Chelsea and Club Brugge in the past week.

Shaw has performed solidly, especially against Brugge when he was among United's better players in an otherwise poor first half display, regularly bailing out the defence.

After another season that has been blighted by injury — with Shaw missing 16 games between August and November with a hamstring problem — the 24-year-old is beginning to come good for again for United.

Neville had been critical of Shaw in the past, especially about his fitness, but admitted that he's been impressed by the former Southampton star's recent form.

"I think Luke Shaw is approaching something like his best in that left centre back position," Neville tweeted.

"He looks strong and has his running back to where it was. I hope he stays clear of injury now."

Shaw played alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in Belgium and the Swede admitted United had made a defensive mistake to allow Brugge to open the scoring early on.

"We shouldn't concede a goal like that but it happens," said Lindelof.

"We scored from a mistake that they made. It's football, it happens, but we shouldn't concede a goal like that."

Solskjaer must now decide which defenders to pick against Watford in the Premier League on Sunday, with Shaw, Lindelof, Maguire and Williams in contention along with Eric Bailly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot.
