Gary Neville highlights Liverpool players as he launches England criticism

Gary Neville believes England missed the creativity of Trent Alexander-Arnold against Scotland as he drew comparison between Liverpool and Gareth Southgate's side.

England struggled to fashion any meaningful opportunities as they were held to a goalless draw in their Euro 2020 clash at Wembley on Friday evening.

Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice were again the deep-lying midfielders with Mason Mount ahead of them in a midfield central three.

And Neville believes England should have echoed the trophy-winning approach of Liverpool - in which Alexander-Arnold has been a key part - with full-backs Reece James and Luke Shaw creating chances.

"It was a sobering experience for England," said Neville. "(Scotland midfielders) Gilmour, McGinn and McGregor were better on the ball than the England midfield players.

"Not just that, Tierney and McTominay at the back were better passing the ball out of the back into midfield.

"Kalvin Phillips isn't as good on the ball or accepting the ball as Gilmour is, who is technically a little bit better. But I can't see England changing. When teams come at them, it will suit them more."

Speaking to ITV Sport, Neville added: "I've watched Liverpool for the the last three or four years without really any creative midfield players.

"(They had) Fabinho, Henderson and Wijnaldum but the creativity comes from the wide areas. They have found a way through their full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"The problem for England was James and Shaw didn’t deliver the creativity I thought they would. I'm concerned about Rice and Phillips."

Alexander-Arnold was named in England's 26-man squad but was forced to withdraw after sustaining a thigh injury during the friendly win over Austria earlier this month.
