Gary Neville hammers Manchester United after Everton defeat - full transcript

Manchester United were hammered 4-0 at Everton on Sunday afternoon as they lost their fifth consecutive away game in succession.

The defeat came as a massive blow to the club's chances of a top-four finish in the Premier League , and if the scoreline wasn't bad enough, the performance was even worse.

Understandably, United legend Gary Neville was furious with his former side after the shocking display.  Speaking after the game the former England defender claimed United have 'weeds' growing in their garden before labelling the performance as 'rancid'.

The biggest issue for Neville was the fact the United squad were not committed enough to the cause and were not working hard enough.

"I'm furious with the fact that he's (Solskjaer) had to go over apologise to the fans," Neville told Sky Sports. "I've often said that if clubs have got weeds in the garden, you've got to get rid of them. There are some Japanese knot weeds at that football club and it's attacking the foundations of the house and needs dealing with properly.

"The fans are not going to turn on Ole. The players have their heads on the line. I watched Man City yesterday and they are a club who Manchester United are trying to get to in terms of the top of the Premier League. Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva - all far better players than what's in the Manchester United dressing room who work twice as hard.

"Everton ran 4K further in the first half. Everton. And then you watch this mob out here in Liverpool who are their biggest rivals, they die for single inch on the pitch. It was embarrassing watching some of those Manchester United players out there today.

"I have full belief in Ole with what he needs to do. The club will fully support him. That performance today was rancid."

Neville added: "I don't need to name names. They know who they are. They are in the papers every day and are on social media.

"I've fallen into the trap of talking about talent. Forget it if they don't work hard enough.

Manchester United's heaviest Premier League defeats and where 4-0 Everton hammering ranks

"I was watching players play for Manchester City yesterday working their absolute backsides off.

"I was watching Manchester United players walk around on that pitch. They were jogging around. I don't mind losing games but you do not drop below the standard of work ethic which is expected at the club.

"Everyone was previously blaming Jose Mourinho. He is one of the most respected managers and in the end, he lost all of the faith in those players. Ole will lose faith in them too."
