Gary Neville hammers Manchester United defence for mistake before Liverpool FC goal

Gary Neville has labelled Manchester United's defence as 'naive' after Liverpool's opening goal at Anfield this afternoon.

Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half thanks to a rocket of a header but United's defence should have done a better job.

Neville is on punditry duties for the clash and he let rip into the United defence for their role in conceding the goal.

"This Liverpool team has essentially got one threat, this man (Virgil van Dijk). I'm not sure the way to deal with it is for Brandon Williams to try to block his run," Neville explained during Sky Sports' coverage of the contest.

"You look at Joe Gomez there, he just impedes (Harry) Maguire but it's a simple block, he is not near enough to him. I don't mind Brandon Williams or Fred being near to him but Harry Maguire has to be nearer to that main threat so he doesn't have a turn at him.

"Once he is where he is and Gomez blocks him, he has no chance. They have been played Manchester United, it's naivety."

Liverpool had a goal ruled by VAR later in the first half as Roberto Firmino's effort was taken away for a foul on David de Gea.

Gini Wijnaldum then thought he'd scored but was ruled offside.
