Gary Neville believes Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum is the “unsung hero” of Jurgen Klopp’s team, as the Premier League champions continue to try and convince the Dutchman to stay.
Wijnaldum is out of contract at the end of the season, and it seems talks over an extension aren’t going well.
The central midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, with the La Liga outfit interested in signing him for free this summer.
Despite the constant speculation over his future, Wijnaldum has been a key figure for Liverpool this season, having played 30 times in all competitions already this season.
And Neville praised the Dutchman during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over West Ham, in which Wijnaldum scored the third goal of the game.
The former Manchester United player said to Sky Sports: "It's been a really good three or four days for Liverpool.
"Wijnaldum is the unsung hero of this team."
Liverpool have bounced back well in recent days after a poor spell of form, and have collected back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since the middle of December.
Wijnaldum has been a key part of that improvement in form, having played 90 minutes in both wins.
And Graeme Souness believes the Dutchman deserves credit for his role recently, but admitted he won’t always get the same acclaim as the front three will.
“They were fantastic, it was Liverpool of the last three seasons,” he said of Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Tottenham on Thursday.
“Aggressive, on the front foot for nearly all of the game, and it was relatively easy for them.
"I just thought Liverpool were more of what we come to expect.
"I know the badge-kissers, the goalscorers get all the acclaim, but for me, watching that game, I’d want to give Milner and Wijnaldum special mention. I bet Klopp wishes Milner wasn’t 35, and that he was 25."
