Gary Neville gives verdict on Manchester United VAR penalty against Man City

Gary Neville believes there was ‘no doubt’ surrounding the awarding of Manchester United’s penalty in their derby against Manchester City .

With just over 20 minutes gone at the Etihad Stadium, Marcus Rashford went down under the challenge of Bernardo Silva as the Portuguese barged into the England international.

Referee Anthony Taylor didn’t award the penalty, but after a VAR review, United were given the chance to take the lead from the spot, despite City’s protests.

Rashford picked himself up to send Ederson the wrong way and put the visitors in front, and just six minutes later the lead was doubled when Anthony Martial beat City’s goalkeeper at his near post to leave the hosts stunned.

And, commentating on the game for Sky Sports, Neville felt there could be no doubt regarding the decision made by VAR in awarding the penalty for the opening goal.

“It’s a stonewall penalty for me,” Neville said. “There’s not even a doubt, Bernardo Silva has just gone in and taken him out.

“Pep Guardiola will be furious, he’s got that look on his face of ‘I’m getting stitched up here by technology’, but it is a penalty, it’s a stonewall penalty.

“He’s asking the question Bernardo Silva, but I think if he looks at it again, I think he’ll realise. It’s not in doubt.

“I don’t think any Manchester City fan can deny that Manchester United have deserved that early goal.”
