Gary Neville gives verdict on David De Gea's new Manchester United contract

Manchester United legend Gary Neville hopes David De Gea 's new contract can be the start of an upturn in his performances and believes he can win another title with the club.

The Spanish goalkeeper put pen-to-paper on a new four-year deal with United amid speculation he could be set to depart the club.

His previous deal was due to expire next summer and both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus had shown an interest in ending his stay in the Premier League .

De Gea's performances have dipped in recent months and Neville believes his poor showing at the World Cup with Spain could have been the cause, labelling his renewal as good news.

"I've got to believe it's good news," he told Sky Sports. "He's got difficulties at home. He wants to play for the national team but he's lost his place. He had a poor World Cup 18 months ago and I don't think he's fully recovered from that. He's made more mistakes for United in the last 15 months than ever before."

Neville believes his new deal can be the catalyst for an improvement in his form.

The ex-United defender added: "With De Gea, there is a lot more sympathy for him than other players.

"There is a genuine feeling that he wanted to go back to Madrid for family reasons. The fact that he's signed, you'd hope that that settles him down and he starts performing.

"Manchester United need a spine. The problem isn't the academy players, it's that they've haven't got a strong, dominant spine.

"De Gea can be a part of that. He has a part of that for a long-time but his performances have dipped well below that."

His Monday Night Football partner Jamie Carragher questioned whether De Gea could lift another Premier League title during the duration of his new contract.

Neville replied: "I always believe yes with United.

"I never believe it's as far away as it looks."
