Gary Neville rips into Arsenal's defensive woes and tells Unai Emery what he must do to fix them

Arsenal's defensive issues have been a huge talking point after the weekend's draw with Watford, but Gary Nevile may have just offered up a solution.

The Gunners let a two-goal lead slip at Vicarage Road after losing possession from a goal-kick and a foul from David Luiz on Roberto Pereyra offered the Hornets a route back into the game.

Those lapses in concentration cost Unai Emery's side two points, meaning that they're now without a win in three games.

Many of Arsenal's defensive errors look to be of their own making, but while conducting a Q&A on Twitter, Neville was asked about how the Gunners could rectify their recent woes.

One user asked: "What do you make of the “whispers” coming from the Arsenal dressing room about the players not understanding what Unai Emery wants?"

Gary Neville replied: "They must know he doesn’t want them to dive in erratically and give the ball away without pressure."

The former defender was then asked how the Gunners could amend their confidence crisis and defensive lapses, to which Nevile simply replied, "change players!"

That solution might be easier said than done, but the hope will certainly be that once the likes of Hector Bellerin, Kieran Tierney and Rob Holding are fully fit, they might just provide a less erratic option at the back.

Watford 2-2 Arsenal: Unai Emery post-match press conference

While defending may require a collective effort, Virgil Van Dijk's arrival at Liverpool in 2018 has come to be held up as an example of how one individual can transform a team's back line.

Arsenal's own new defensive signing, William Saliba, is set to join the Gunners next season after a year on loan with Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1.

However, the young defender will need time to become a key figure for the Gunners as the club try to find the right combination of centre-backs.

Shkodran Mustafi was linked away from the Emirates in the summer while ex-captain Laurent Koscielny forced an exit to join Bordeaux.

Emery spoke out about why the error-prone German remained with Arsenal despite interest in a move away.

"Mustafi decided to be here and when he decided to be here he's like another player," said the head coach.

"Of course I respect his decision. When he decided I spoke to him and said 'you're one more in the squad, I'm going to work with you as other players.

"He decided to be here, I don't know exactly who was in his decision but when we spoke and he decided to stay here it's a start with him as another player in the squad.

"He chose how he can be here. Really since he decided to stay here he's working every day with a big motivation and good spirit.

"That is one issue I want from every player: training with good spirit, helping and after giving us his performance in training and the match."
