Gary Neville explains why Paul Pogba can be the leader Manchester United need

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has identified the reasons why Paul Pogba can become the leader that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side need in the squad.

The Red Devils have endured a shaky start to the season, suffering defeat to West Ham in the Premier League and requiring penalties to see off Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.

That has increased the pressure upon United, who face Arsenal at Old Trafford this evening ahead of their Europa League clash against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.

Positive results from those matches, as well as the weekend's trip to face Newcastle United, are important ahead of the international break and the squad need to improve.

Among those are World Cup winner Pogba , who continues to have question marks surrounding his future at the club, but Neville believes he could become the important figure that Solskjaer's side are crying out for.

"We’ve said all along that this squad lacks a spine. It lacks leaders and it lacks the personality sometimes when it’s difficult in games," he told Sky Sports.

"We’ve all seen the video of Paul Pogba before the World Cup final, rousing speeches to his team-mates, going through every single one of them to try and lift their spirits, to try and motivate them. Manchester United need that more than ever.

"He is the best player when he wants to be. He’s the most talented player, the most expensive player, the one who’s got the world class reputation and Manchester United need that more than ever.

"They’ve got Harry Maguire who brings personality to the defence. They need something else in midfield. McTominay and Pereira are in there with him. They are young lads, they’ll run all day, but he’s the one that can bring that little bit of composure and authority."
