Gary Neville explains why Manchester United's Scott McTominay has surprised him

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has explained how Scott McTominay surprised him, by growing into a viable midfield option for the club.

United will be without key midfielders McTominay and Paul Pogba for today's clash with Sheffield United, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer short of options.

The Norwegian has picked Phil Jones for McTominay in the only change from the team that faced (and beat) Brighton in their last Premier League outing. before the game that Jones could play in midfield.

And Neville, while explaining that he believed midfield to be a problem area for the Old Trafford club, praised McTominay's attitude and improvement.

He told Sky Sports: "When Scott McTominay came on the scene a few years ago, I didn’t think he had the quality to be a Manchester United player in that midfield area, I thought he would end up playing as a centre-back.

“But he has improved enormously and surprised not only with his ability but his temperament and character. He’s been outstanding, he’s been a leader in a team that has struggled this season.

“The midfield is a problem for Manchester United and it’s because McTominay is injured, the midfield has been a problem full stop and it needs strengthening.”

Fred and Andreas Pereira are the other players likely to play in the midfield region for United against the Blades at Bramall Lane.
