Gary Neville explains what Manchester United must do to challenge Liverpool FC and Man City for Premier League

Manchester United need to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer financial backing and assistance behind the scenes to sort 12 deals if they are to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City, according to Gary Neville.

Solskjaer has revitalised United since taking over from Jose Mourinho back in December and has closed the gap on the top four to just goal difference.

However, City are 16 points ahead and Liverpool 18, and United are going to have to vastly improve if they're to mount a serious title charge next season.

Neville believes United to convince four players to sign new contracts, four new players to sign and sell four players if they are to close the gap at the top.

"What you have to look at is how United bridge that gap," Neville said to Sky Sports. "And yes they will do that through the spirit that Solskjaer has created, but they have to get better players on the pitch that can compete with Liverpool and City to go along with some of the very good players they've already got.

"United have a big, big job. There are four or five players that Solskjaer will want to keep that are out of contract and he needs to tie down. There are four or five players he will need to bring in, and there are probably four or five players that he needs to get out."

United are in the process of recruiting a technical director who would help with recruitment at the club and Neville believes support for Solskjaer is vital.

"I've said before they need the best-in-class recruitment and technical support in behind the manager, or else it will continue to fail," Neville added.

"It needs a good 'wheeler dealer' behind the scenes, someone who can manage that situation. United haven't been brilliant at that in the last few years.

"I think that's the big job. That's not Solskjaer's job, but it will determine the outcome of his success in terms of the future."
