Gary Neville explains how Manchester United were 'sanitised' in transfer market

Gary Neville believes Manchester United have been 'sanitised' of players who were only at Old Trafford for the money, as he explained their rapid improvement under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United's 3-0 win over Brighton on Tuesday night stretched their unbeaten run to 15 matches, with the impact of January signing Bruno Fernandes again on display as he scored twice. Mason Greenwood got the other goal.

And former player Neville, who took to Instagram to post a personal video summarising United's recent rise, has urged the club to build on their excellent form and try to close the gap to Liverpool and Man City.

Before the game on Tuesday, Neville lauded Jurgen Klopp's Premier League title winners but admitted it hurt him to see Liverpool win the league. Now he believes United are heading in the right direction after years of drifting since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

"A little bit on Manchester United and what I've seen in the last few months," Neville began.

"There's no doubt that a year ago there was a massive worry about the club's direction, where it was going.

"There's been a huge improvement. The club has been sanitised from a point of view players who were just coming for money.

"When you look on the players out on the pitch there's a mixture of players who weren't working who are now working because they're surrounded by better players, young players who are desperate to play for the club.

"And some players, who have got great ability, who have realigned their commitment to the club over these last few months. And certainly a better frame of mind.

"However, now is the time to go for it, get those three or four players in that are needed, close that gap now and get close to that title."

Neville said while working as a pundit on Sky Sports at the Amex Stadium that United needed three or four signings and urged the club's fans not to get carried away with the recent form.

"Definitely a step in the right direction, some of the players are progressing, year-on-year, month-on-month, but there’s still a lot more needed," he said.
