Gary Neville disagrees with Man Utd teammate over Liverpool Premier League title fate

Gary Neville has disagreed with former team-mate Rio Ferdinand and insisted the Premier League season must be completed.

Ferdinand called for the current campaign to be declared void on Monday afternoon - even if that means Liverpool are denied the title in the process.

The Reds are just two wins away from officially being crowned Premier League champions, but it still remains to be seen when the action will return.

All Premier League fixtures are currently suspended until April 30 at the earliest, but health experts are warning that the suspension could be extended with the worst of the Covid-19 outbreak yet to hit the UK.

“I just think the Premier League should just be voided,” Ferdinand said on Instagram. “Just void it. I know there are going to be a lot of Liverpool fans going 'Oh Rio, it's just because you support Manchester United and it's Liverpool'.

“It's not that, it's just that I don't see a way that it can be done, where health isn't compromised. Simple as that."

But Neville has hit back at those claims and believes no such decision is needed yet, and that the authorities should bide their time before making a call on what should happen next.

"I don't believe there needs to be a decision made on these types of things," the now Sky Sports pundit told ITV's Good Morning Britain.

"My instinct is to try and complete the season because I think that there are obviously things at stake for all teams.

"The Olympics should happen at the earliest possible point, when it can happen safely. The European Championships has been moved to next year, it's not been cancelled, it's been postponed.

"My view at this moment in time is that sporting events should be postponed and we should get everybody safe, everybody well, and then think about what we do about it after that.

"But my instinct is to say we should resume with seasons, tournaments that have been missed and been postponed."

And even though Neville was keen to stress that fairness should come above rivalry, he couldn’t help but admit he has been winding up Jamie Carragher over Liverpool’s title bid.

"I'm fully aware of that (Liverpool winning the league), but I'm trying to keep away from the rivalry things at the moment," he added.

"I always look at it as if my team were at the top then I'd want it to resume, so if Liverpool are at the top at this moment in time in such an emphatic position then I think it should resume as well.

"Although I do keep sending (Jamie) Carragher an asterisk sign saying that if it does get cancelled and they do get handed the league then there will be a little asterisk sign next to it for Liverpool."
