Gary Neville disagrees with Graeme Souness and Ledley King's Harry Kane position at Tottenham

Gary Neville doesn't "buy into the theory" that Harry Kane dropping deeper in recent games is proving to be a problem for Tottenham.

The England captain has suffered a slow start to the season, with just three goals to his name, at the time of writing, in all competitions.

Kane's form follows a summer full of speculation over his future at Spurs, with the 28-year-old said to have wanted a move away from the north London club.

The Tottenham star has a tendency to drop deep during matches to try and see more of the ball, with Kane's passing ability one of his greatest assets.

Speaking prior to Tottenham's clash with Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, Sky Sports pundits Graeme Souness and Ledley King both gave their honest opinion on Kane's position at Spurs.

"He’s playing far too deep no matter how you dress it up," Souness said.

"His touches in the box aren’t the same, he’s having less and less touches in the box.

"I think Harry has let himself become not a number nine, not the player where there was so much to admire, not the player who would come towards the ball spin and go towards the channels, he’s reversed that now by threatening to run long and coming short all the time.

"What happens to old centre forwards and it’s not the case for him, he has to be reminded of his duties, all centre forwards needs to stop running the channels and start to come towards the ball.

"We’ve got two top centre halves here, ask either of them which player they would prefer to play against, Harry Kane today or Harry Kane from two seasons ago? You don’t want him threatening to run beyond you."

King added: " I prefer Harry to be up top, threatening the last line at times because he can do that and we know if he gets in he’s lethal.

"Last week Son, played up top and Kane was more of a number 10, glad to see Harry back at the top today."

However, during the game, Neville, who was on co-commentary duty, disagreed with both of his colleagues.

"Well, I’m going to talk about the main man for Spurs, Harry Kane, there’s been a lot of talk between Graeme [Souness], Tony [Adams] and Ledley [King] about his positioning and coming a lot deeper," Neville said on Sky Sports.

"But I don’t buy into that theory, he dropped into that position last season and we lauded him for it, he adapted his game, got 14 assists - the most in the Premier League - I think the only thing I can see that’s changed is, two things, one he’s asked to leave and people are questioning whether he’s unhappy and the second thing is that his manager Nuno does have a record at Wolves for not scoring and creating the most chances, Tottenham’s three goals in five games is a real concern it’s not just a Kane problem."
