Gary Neville delivers verdict on Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips ahead of England vs Germany

Gary Neville has urged Gareth Southgate to stick with Kalvin Phillips against Germany for their Euro 2020 last-16 tie.

England will face their old enemy at Wembley on Tuesday, June 29, after Joachim Low's side finished as runners up in Group F.

The Three Lions sealed top spot with wins over the Czech Republic, Croatia and a draw with Scotland, whilst Germany were on the brink of heading out of the competition before salvaging a late draw against Hungary.

The Germans ended the group on four points, with a defeat to France and victory over Portugal enough to see them into the round of 16.

Understandably, the mouthwatering tie ahead has already kicked off discussions about how England try to reach the last eight.

With Germany operating in a 3-4-3 system, the feeling amongst the media is Southgate may try to match up their formation, having played a three-man defence to reach the World Cup semi-final in Russia three years ago.

Phillips has started England's first three Euro 2020 matches and Neville believes he'll be an important player against Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos in midfield.

The former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit believes the Leeds United star will retain his place alongside Declan Rice, with Reece James, coming in for Jack Grealish as the only change from the side that beat the Czech Republic.

That would leave Jordan Pickford in goal, a back three of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Harry Maguire, flanked by James and Luk Shaw.

Phillips and Rice as two holding midfielders, with a front three of Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka and captain Harry Kane.
