Gary Neville defies Manchester United sacking calls as Motherwell boss Graham Alexander named as unlikely example

Manchester United legend and Salford City co-owner Gary Neville admits he made an error in sacking Motherwell boss Graham Alexander last season - and says his former club shouldn't repeat his actions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Alexander currently has the Steelmen sixth in the Scottish Premiership after his appointment as manager in January of this year.

His previous job was with Salford City, who he led to promotion to the English Football League in his first season in 2019.

Alexander was sacked last October with Neville's club fifth in League Two, having gone unbeaten in their first five games.

Now Neville faces fresh urges on wielding the axe, although not at his club. There are calls for United manager Solskjaer to be sacked after a 5-0 hammering off Liverpool in the Premier League.

United have started the season poorly and performances have often look disjointed.

But club legend Neville - who provided analysis for the game for Sky Sports - pointed to his own experience with the Motherwell boss as to why Manchester United shouldn't sack his former teammate.

"I might be wrong, but I don't think Antonio Conte is a fit," said Neville. "You could bring him in tomorrow and I'd get behind him.

"A coach with a specific style like Louis Van Gaal didn't work. I am not saying there isn't a manager who can come to Manchester United and do well.

"If that it isn't Ole, I hope it happens. But today, I personally think it would be wrong to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after this.

"I sacked a manager last season after six games. It was the wrong thing to do and I should have let it breathe. I should have left it until the end of the season and I think Manchester United will do that."
