Gary Neville defends Tottenham's form and makes prediction for Liverpool clash

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has insisted that the criticism aimed at Tottenham Hotspur is "over the top".

Spurs have made a poor start to the 2019/20 campaign and sit tenth in the Premier League table ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

The game at Anfield marks another tough test for Mauricio Pochettino's side and defeat to the league leaders would mark their fourth of the season after only ten games.

Tottenham's record away from home against the 'big six' hasn't been great in recent seasons, which makes them outsiders for the Merseyside clash.

However, Neville has insisted Spurs can go and trouble Liverpool, despite being underdogs, and believes that the criticism that has been fired at them has been slightly too harsh.

"I wouldn't expect Tottenham to come here and win today if I was putting a bet on," Neville admitted, speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game.

"It's a tough place to play full stop, we can talk about Tottenham's record away at the top six which is obviously poor but coming here generally for every team has been a problem.

"I think it is a game where Tottenham have less pressure, there won't be people sat at home thinking they are going to win. They can cause them problems, they just need to have the right players in the teams.

Mauricio Pochettino: off-field team bonding will help the squad

"If you can get Moura and Son behind Kane they will cause Liverpool problems. It will be interesting to see if they go with the five-at-the-back like United did, I know they played that against Watford.

"I've got a soft spot for Spurs, as Roy [Keane] alluded to them over the last 25 years, this Spurs haven't been soft over the last three or four years. Pochettino has put something into this team, we've enjoyed watching them.

"I think the criticism they're getting at this moment in time is over the top for the work over the last three or four years that these players and this manager have done. I know they haven't won a trophy and people judge teams by a trophy but it's a Tottenham team I have enjoyed a lot more."
