Gary Neville compares Harry Kane to Real Madrid Galactico - and it's not Ronaldo

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has been compared to Real Madrid Galactico Zinedine Zidane.

Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville made the observation after watching the Spurs striker get the better off Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte in the first-half of Saturday's Premier League clash.

The England international went into the game with 13 goals across all competitions to his name so far this term, but Kane hasn't just caught the eye with his goals; 10 assists prove he's more than just a scorer, but a provider too.

So much so that Neville can see legendary World Cup winning playmaker Zidane in Kane's overall game.

Jose Mourinho has increasingly encouraged Kane to drop into deeper pockets of space, with Son Heung-min then the most advanced Spurs forward making runs in behind for the captain to find him with his vision.

"He’s playing brilliantly in that role, Harry Kane. I’m gonna get mocked for saying this, but there’s a little bit of Zidane in him when he gets the ball in that position with how he sort of shields it and protects it," Neville said on commentary.

"Yeah, it’s the physicality, the touch in the way he gets the ball, protects it and shields it. No-one can get near him.

"Well, I couldn’t (laughs).

"Maybe that’s not the measure.

"He is messing with them like you wouldn’t believe. I remember a few years ago when they played at Wembley against Liverpool, Harry Kane was sensational, I think against Dejan Lovren that day - I think he got substituted.

"This is as good as I’ve seen him since then. He’s had some brilliant games, but in a top game, a hard game against Man City, he’s been spectacular."

The term 'Galactico' became popular in the 2000s during Florentino Perez's first term as president of Real Madrid when he and the club's recruitment policy prioritised superstars.

As a result, the likes of Ronaldo, Zidane, Luis Figo and David Beckham all arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu over a six-year period.

Given Kane's goalscoring record, many may have compared him to Ronaldo - or even Cristiano Ronaldo who was part of Perez's second tenure as Real Madrid president.

But the Zidane comparison is perhaps the ultimate compliment in terms of Kane's progression into an all-round elite footballer.
