Gary Neville comments on why Leeds United are being handicapped financially

Whisper it quietly, but Leeds United fans may be finding a soft spot for Gary Neville.

The former Manchester United defender was a staunch rival of Leeds given his devoted dedication to the Old Trafford club.

Many a time Neville came up against Leeds during his playing days, especially in the early 2000s when the two clubs were fighting it out at the top of the Premier League.

And he recently stirred tensions between himself and the Whites when he made the admission : "I would never have played for (Manchester) City or Liverpool or Leeds United in a million years."

But now as a respected pundit for Sky Sports, Neville has won over many supporters for his straight-talking common sense when it comes to a range of football issues.

Neville's latest comments have brought into question the large disparity in funding between top flights clubs and those in the EFL, such as Leeds.

He gave an example of the types of figures that clubs in different divisions will receive for TV rights - and Neville insists the matter needs addressing.

"What we are seeing is the main structural flaw in English football, which I have called for government intervention on for many years," he said, during a Sky Sports podcast.

“We have the most amazing Premier League, but you’ve got the bottom club in the Premier League gaining £100million and the top club in the EFL, Leeds United, getting £3million then you must see the disconnect and the disproportionate financial reward that is put through football.

"It needs resetting.”

Neville's comments came before the Whites posted their accounts for 2018/19.

Despite record revenues of £49million for a second tier club without the aid of parachute payments, Leeds posted an overall annual loss of £21million.
