Gary Neville casts doubt on 'Project Restart' after Boris Johnson comments

Gary Neville has warned that Monday's Premier League meeting could merely see the league look to delay 'Project Restart' following Sunday night's address from the prime minister.

League chiefs had been looking to Boris Johnson for guidance on how they could move forward with their plan to resume action on June 12, but Johnson's speech didn't mention anything specific about top level sports resuming.

He did discuss members of the public being able to exercise and play sports outside, but only with people that you live with as he said nothing about sports at a professional level.

"From this Wednesday, we want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise," said Johnson.

Johnson addressed the UK on Sunday night (ITV)

"You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household."

On the battle to control the virus generally, he added: “It would be madness now to throw away that achievement by allowing a second spike.

“We must stay alert. We must continue to control the virus and save lives.”

Neville thinks that the announcements don't bode well for the Premier League, who are hoping to secure a firm commitment to returning to both training and eventually playing matches in the coming week.

Neville tweeted his concerns (@GNev2 - Twitter)

He tweeted: "I’d be surprised if we didn’t see the PL in this meet today bump the 'Project Restart' plan down the road again.

"They’ve been hanging their hat on government guidance. Their (sic) isn’t anything in that speech last night that will comfort the Players/Dr’s at clubs."

The league are set to discuss training protocols on Monday, with further opinion then sought from managers and players before a vote on a return.
