Gary Neville on European Super League: Manchester United legend calls for points deduction for ‘Big Six’ plans

A furious Gary Neville called for the Premier League to impose points deductions on any clubs involved in reported plans for a breakaway European Super League

Uefa are due to rubber-stamp proposals for an expanded Champions League format at a meeting of its executive committee tomorrow, but The Times reported on Sunday that several leading clubs have revived plans for a breakaway competition.

The report claims that top Italian and Spanish clubs are involved, as well as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham. Numerous reports elsewhere have claimed that Premier League champions-elect Manchester City are also part of the potential breakaway group.

“In the wake of Covid, it’s an absolute scandal,” said Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports during Manchester United’s Premier League meeting with Burnley. “United and the rest of the Big Six clubs who have signed up for it should be ashamed of themselves.

“European football league. Are Arsenal in that? They’ve just drawn with Fulham. And Manchester United are drawing with Burnley.

“They should deduct all top six teams point. To do it in the season - it’s a joke.”
