Gary Neville believes Brendan Rodgers 'up there' with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp

Gary Neville believes Brendan Rodgers is 'up there' as a coach alongside Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

The Leicester City boss spent three years at Anfield and almost led the club to their first-ever Premier League title in 2014 but narrowly missed out to Manchester City.

Rodgers was then sacked and replaced by Klopp in 2015, with the Northern Irishman heading to Celtic.

A return to the Premier League with Leicester saw the Foxes lead the way with Liverpool for a majority of last season but their form after lockdown saw them slide out of the Champions League places and into fifth.

Heading into the international break, Leicester have made another fine start and top the division, drawing praise across the board for their counter-attacking qualities, which saw them humble Manchester City 5-2 at the Etihad Stadium.

Neville has now claimed that Rodgers isn't far away from the level of Klopp or Guardiola, despite the widespread view that British coaches aren't at the same top tier as those managing in the top-six of English football.

"Leicester are an awkward, awkward proposition," Neville told The Gary Neville Podcast.

"They do a lot of things very well, they're efficient, well-coached. They started last season really well, fell away at the end.

"It's an outstanding performance from Brendan Rodgers. Wolves are a very difficult customer to get past, and what Leicester are doing is outstanding.

"It proves it's no one-season wonder, there's continuity now, and he's one of the outstanding managers in the league, Brendan Rodgers.

"We talk about British coaches not being at the level of Klopp or Pep or Jose or Poch. But actually, Brendan Rodgers has finished second with Liverpool, done what he did with Leicester, and is up there really.

"He's a fantastic coach."
