Gary Neville and Roy Keane debate Anthony Martial's Manchester United future after Man City win

Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane have debated Anthony Martial's situation at the club, following the 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

The French forward struck United 's second goal of the game just six minutes after Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the visiting side, which meant that Nicolas Otamendi's second-half effort was merely a consolation.

Martial 's effort was his fourth in 10 Premier League appearances this season, with the 24-year-old also registering three assists this term, but his future continues to be shrouded in speculation.

However, Neville believes that United should continue to stick with Martial as he has the potential to be a key player - and the risk of him coming back to haunt him if they approved a departure is high.

"With Martial, I think Jose Mourinho would have maybe sold him or swapped him last season. I think the club probably dug their heels in, which was probably the start of the dispute between them with them overruling the manager," Neville told Sky Sports.

"Myself, I'm confused whether he is a world class striker or whether he is someone who is just pretending to be something. Even today, you look at him and think he's a fantastic player who is cool, with great composure, he's strong and he can hold the ball.

"Then other weeks you look at him and it's different. There is definitely a persistence that needs to occur with Martial in the sense that he has to have his chance because the idea of selling him and him coming back to bite you, which he could do, is something that you can't risk.

"So I think that is the reason why they have kept him and are always giving him his opportunity."

Keane disagreed, though, explaining his belief that United have already given the forward plenty of chances and that his inconsistency is a problem.

"The key for any player when you talk about a big club, you don't know what you're going to get with him, and they are no good for you. I wouldn't hang my hat on him," Keane replied.

"I'm not convinced by him. He's had many chances, hasn't he? How long do you wait when you are Manchester United?"
